The Book of Morfeo Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lalla58 -- A cutting denunciation of Big Pharma : Lately we’ve been hearing a lot about the opioid crisis in the US so I was curious to read this novella by an Italian author who is writing about this very subject. I found the story very involving and moving, but never sad, thanks to the author’s humor and his sharp satirical pen. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from enrico minardi -- Fantastically Funny! : Stefano Benni is quite a famous Italian author who has sold million of copies of his books in his home country and around the world. The Book of Morfeo is the last English translation to appear on the market. As usual, Benni applies a funny-serious take on his subject (the corruption and damages inflicted to humans by the pharmaceutical industry), with several surprising characters taking the stage to perform their antics, as in an updated Commedia dell’Arte. However, it is because of his unique literary style that Benni is capable to convey to the public his fierce criticism to the industry, while still amusing them, as if the theme he has chosen to tackle was something light. I could not put down the book for a second, and in the meanwhile I was bursting with laughter at each page. The Book of Morfeo is absolutely a must-read for anybody interested in discovering a new amazing writer. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anonimo -- There’s always hope : Parts of this book are depressing, even frightening. Addiction is a pretty depressing subject. Even so, Benni manages to find a lot of humor and absurdity in it. But what I liked best about this book is the sense of hope. The author also seems to be writing from personal experience. I don’t want to give the plot away but I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with addiction or knows someone who is. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Steve Shafer -- A lot to think about : Sometimes you read a book just for fun but you end up thinking about it long after you finish it. This was the case for this book, it made me think how easy it is to get addicted to drugs, how a stupid accident can change your entire life, and how your friends and family are indispensable to overcome life’s challenges. A short but dense novel. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sophia Williams -- The story of a little boy named Morfeo : An Italian friend recommended this book. Benni is a very popular author in Italy and she read it a few years ago. I came to care for little Morfeo’s bad luck and his struggle with addiction throughout his adult life. The characters are bizarre but somehow also very real and engaging. You have to accept Benni's world on its own terms but once I did, I really got into the story. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Just a shopper -- Hilarious : Hilarious story, full of incredible characters and an unexpected twist at the end. Recommended. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Francesca -- Our Book Club Read This : We read this in our book club. It's a short book but with a ton of discussion topics. Addiction, the power of big Pharma, despair and hope and the importance of family and friends to face life’s challenges. I would have given it five stars but knocked off a star because I think it could have been a little longer. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2022 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eric Williamson -- If you love Daniel Pennac, you’ll love Stefano Benni : I'm a big fan of Pennac and I found Benni’s style very similar. I really enjoyed his quirky, fantastical universe and his colorful, hilarious characters. This is actually about a pretty serious subject but it reads like a fairy tale.
